LATEST EXPEDITIONS
Week 3 August 4-8
Even in our third week together it was a week of beginnings. In writing we practiced writing four different kinds of beginnings for narrative stories. Students practiced writing Action, Sound, Thought, and Dialogue beginnings. Next week we'll be focusing on Elaborative Detail and honing our description skills.
We continued practicing literacy skills to prepare us for our literature circles. I think we're all excited to share our ideas and thoughts about reading in that setting. In Bud, not Buddy our protagonist escaped from the Amoses and is looking for his favorite librarian to help him.
We always take a walk around the block on Fridays to explore our community. But this week we walked around our school to practice our addition. We counted our steps on each of the four streets we walked on and then found the sum of them all. It's amazing how hard it is to keep track of so many steps!
We're really excited to head to the mountains and see a really big rock, Hanging Rock! This week we'll be learning about different types of rocks and preparing ourselves for what we will see there.

Week 2 July 31st-Aug 4th
The first full week is in the books and so are several other things. This week the students finished their Japanese name stamp project by displaying and evaluating their work. In every project we hope to build project skills and students said they felt they learned how to plan a little better, make stronger designs, and how to use new tools.
We did our first expository writing when we composed a paragraph about how we made our stamps. Throughout the year we will be focusing on all the steps of the writing process as well as writing skills. Our goal is to have the students able to plan, write with description, edit, and publish strong writing in both fiction and non-fiction form. Writing about their stamps gave the students a tangible and clear topic and they got good practice with each of the steps of the writing process.
In math this week we focused on place value and addition. We refreshed the standard algorithm and practiced it as well as the partial sum method in which you add the tens before you add the ones.
We want to be a classroom where readers interact with their writing and so we have named three things that your brain does when it is reading good writing: 1. Makes Connections 2. Makes Connections 3. Ask Questions We will share these interactions with text in our book club discussions to hear what ideas and thoughts others have about a common text.

Getting ready for Pea Island
|
we talked about old salem. In PE we did group exercises with pumpkins for instincts we did relay races rolling the pumpkins. We read tomorrow's pages because it is a early release tomorrow
Today we learned more about geomotry like how we never really drew a line, because lines go on for infinity.
